Your skin barrier (and why you might be over-cleansing)
Your sebum is one shield, keeping water in and bacteria and irritants out. But there's a second shield underneath it: a physical one, your skin barrier. And a lot of breakouts and irritation come down to that barrier being scrubbed and stripped harder than it can handle.
What the barrier actually is
"Skin barrier" is the everyday name for your outermost layer, the stratum corneum. It's a sheet of flattened dead skin cells that sits between you and the outside world.
Picture a brick wall. The cells are the bricks, stacked in overlapping rows for stability. Between them sit lipids and protein complexes called desmosomes, which work like rivets holding the bricks together and giving the wall its strength.
That wall protects you for two reasons. It's thick, so it's harder for environmental stress to push through, the way a solid wall beats a flimsy one. And it's oily: the lipids packed between the cells are ceramides, free fatty acids and cholesterol (yes, the same cholesterol that's in your breakfast eggs).
Keeping water in
Together, the wall and its oils act like a lid on a steaming pot, slowing the water inside your body from escaping into the air.
Some water always leaves through a process called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. Your deeper skin layers hold up to 70% water, and a little of it travels up and evaporates off the surface. That's normal and necessary. But too much of it tips into dryness and dehydration, and water matters here because it helps new skin cells grow and mature. A healthy barrier keeps that loss to a minimum.
Drawing water back in
The stratum corneum doesn't only hold water in. It also pulls water toward the surface, using natural moisturizing factors (NMFs).
NMFs are a mix of small molecules, including amino acids, urea, lactate and sugars. They behave like a sponge, grabbing water and holding onto it. Several show up in moisturizers too: urea (or its precursor arginine) helps top up moisture, glycerol tracks closely with how hydrated skin actually is, and hyaluronic acid can hold many times its weight in water.
Here's the catch. NMFs sit highest in the middle of the stratum corneum, and there are barely any on the outermost surface, because that's where cleansing washes them away.
Where over-cleansing comes in
This is where a lot of well-meaning routines go wrong. Two things wear the barrier down faster than people expect.
Exfoliating actives like retinoids, BHAs and AHAs loosen the proteins holding your outer cells together. Useful in the right dose, but they leave the physical wall thinner.
Surfactants, the cleansing agents in most face washes, bind to both water and oil. That's how they lift away excess sebum, and it's also how they strip the lipids and moisturizing factors your barrier needs to function.
So there's a real trade-off. Cleansing handles the oily, congested feeling that drives a lot of breakout routines, but overdoing it weakens the skin's ability to protect itself. The fix isn't to stop, it's to go gradually. Build up cleansing and exfoliating frequency slowly, and read your skin's signals. Tightness, stinging, new sensitivity or flaking are all signs to scale back and let the barrier recover before pushing again.
