Cleansing oily skin without stripping
Cleanser is the step where oily skin does itself the most damage, because it's the step where the feedback feels best. Something squeaks, something is clean, the logic is hard to argue with in the moment.
The squeaky-clean trap
That tight, squeaky feeling isn't proof the cleanser worked. It's what a stripped barrier feels like. Soap-based washes read on a label as sodium cocoate, potassium cocoate or sodium tallowate, and they sit around pH 9 to 10, well above where skin sits. They take barrier lipids out with the surface oil. Sodium lauryl sulfate, the strongest surfactant in mainstream use, is what dermatology labs reach for when they want to provoke an irritant reaction on purpose.
You know how the loop runs by now. Lipids out, water out faster, more sebum up to reseal, and the skin gets shinier and touchier at the same time.
Reading a cleanser
Harshness sits on a ladder, and the names become readable after you've seen them a few times. The gentle end is the amino-acid surfactants (sodium cocoyl glutamate, sodium lauroyl glutamate, sodium cocoyl glycinate), the isethionates (sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate), the betaines (cocamidopropyl betaine, coco-betaine) and the sugar-derived glucosides. The middle is sodium laureth sulfate, measurably milder than its cousin in barrier testing but still an ethoxylated sulfate. The harsh end is sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium coco-sulfate (sold as the natural alternative, with much the same irritation profile) and soap.
pH belongs in the same read. Amino-acid systems are built acidic, around 4.5 to 5.5, close to skin's own, and something near 5.5 is a reasonable thing to want on the label or in the brand's own copy. Glucosides are very mild but slightly alkaline alone, nearer 7 to 9, so they're usually blended with something acidic.
Foam tells you almost nothing. Sodium cocoyl glutamate foams and sits in the gentlest tier; sodium lauryl sulfate foams and sits in the harshest. Glucosides foam modestly, which plenty of people read as a cleanser that isn't working. When oil beats foam
Sebum is oil. Most makeup is oil-based, and most of the UV filters in your sunscreen are oil-soluble too. A water-based wash is working against that chemistry the whole time, while an oil or balm dissolves straight into it. That's why cleansing oils are built on squalane, jojoba and mineral oil: squalane is sebum-soluble, and jojoba is a liquid wax ester close to what your own glands make.
So the second step, what people call double cleansing, earns its place when there's something oily to take off first: makeup, a heavy sunscreen layer, a hot day's worth of sweat and sebum. On a bare-skin evening it's just an extra wash. How often
Twice a day is the ceiling, not a target to beat. Beyond that you're accelerating the water loss you were trying to prevent. Morning cleansing does earn its place on oily skin, since a night's sebum is sitting there waiting, but a gentle gel or a low-sulfate foam covers it. Nothing about 7am calls for the strongest thing in the cupboard. And leave the gritty scrubs where they are, however satisfying the texture.
