Vitamin C without the confusion

Vitamin C is on a lot of labels under a lot of names, and those names aren't interchangeable. Some of them are the well-studied molecule. Some are quieter relatives riding on its reputation. The difference decides what your serum is capable of, and it's printed on the back of the box.

What it actually does

Three jobs, all documented. It mops up the free radicals that UV generates in skin. It's a required helper for the enzymes that crosslink new collagen. And it interferes with melanin production while reducing pigment that has already oxidised, which is the brightening half of its reputation.

The antioxidant work is the best-measured part. A 15 percent L-ascorbic acid solution with 1 percent vitamin E gave a four-fold protection factor against UV redness, sunburn cells and DNA damage in the Duke studies, and adding 0.5 percent ferulic acid stabilised the formula and roughly doubled that protection. Read that as something you add to your sunscreen, never as something that replaces part of it.

The pure form and the derivatives

L-ascorbic acid is pure vitamin C and the form with the strongest evidence behind it. It also comes with conditions. It only penetrates and stays stable below about pH 3.5, and that low pH is the same thing that makes it sting, so rosacea-prone, eczema-prone and generally reactive skin often does better elsewhere. Meaningful brightening needs a dedicated serum, usually in the 10 to 20 percent range.

The derivatives were built to solve the stability problem. Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate holds up at neutral pH and is usually formulated at around 3 percent; its sodium counterpart behaves much the same way and turns up anywhere from 1 to 5 percent. Ascorbyl glucoside is converted to ascorbic acid in the skin by an enzyme and is less irritating than the pure form. 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid is fat-soluble, penetrates well and works at neutral pH. Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is a fat-soluble ester that survives well in oil-phase formulas.

Where they part company with L-ascorbic acid is the evidence, which isn't the same weight. The pure form has the strong human data behind it; every one of those derivatives sits a tier below that, and the long tail of other ascorbyl esters you'll see on labels sits lower again, at trace-level rather than working concentrations. They're gentler, they keep better on your shelf, and the case for them is thinner. Gentler is a real reason to choose one. Equivalent is not a claim the evidence supports.

Why your serum turns brown

Above roughly pH 4, ascorbic acid oxidises quickly, first to a yellow compound and then to brown breakdown products. That colour change is the visible signal that the activity has gone, and one of those breakdown products can stain skin, which is where the odd temporary orange tint comes from.

So the packaging is part of the product. Opaque or airless, kept somewhere cool and dark, bought in a size you'll actually finish. A clear dropper bottle on a sunny windowsill is a bad container for this molecule whatever the formula cost. Using it without fuss

Mornings suit it, under sunscreen, where the antioxidant work has something to do. Evening use isn't wrong if that's when you'll actually remember.

The niacinamide warning you've read is a myth. The idea that the two cancel each other out comes from 1960s lab-bench conditions and doesn't apply to modern formulas. Layer them.

One pairing is worth avoiding: benzoyl peroxide oxidises ascorbic acid on contact, so keep those two at opposite ends of the day. Start with a lower strength if your skin is reactive, patch test as you would with anything new, and give it the same patience the rest of this course asks for.
